Favorite Books and Book Series

I’ve always loved to read. As an elementary student I remember trying to get the most stars on the reading chart at the back of the classroom. I was in competition with my best friend at the time, she read more and faster than I did!

Favorite Books and Book Series

My goal in 5th grade was to read every book that had won the Newbery Medal. I didn’t read all of them, but did discover some great books in the process!

A few of my favorites included;

The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleischman

Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary

Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O’Brien

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle

King of the Wind by Marguerite Henry

Looking at that list it’s easy to guess when I was in elementary school! Oops.

My love for reading continued on through junior high and high school, but with an increased homework load, horseback riding, and a blossoming social life, reading took a back seat. Of course, I still read, but not nearly as much as in my younger years. I think I read every horse book available! The Red Pony by John Steinbeck was one of my favorites.

In recent years, my love for reading has been re-ignited. I was given a Nook for Christmas by my older brother when they first came out and have hundreds of books on it by now. I’ve read every. single one. There are several books/series on my Nook that I have read multiple times. I like longer books, books with 500+ pages, because I tend to be a fast reader and can’t afford to be buying a new book to read every few days.  I am also drawn to series, since I can follow the characters through multiple books.

This is great. I also was that kid, working hard to get way more stars on the book chart than everyone else! (And, I suspect we were in elementary school around the same time). I still read about a book a week and have become a fan of Goodreads for tracking them (the adult version of the star chart, I guess)!

I have a Goodreads account but have not updated it in a LONG time!! (you are right, it is totally the adult version of star chart!)

      Have any good book suggestions?

As a kid I loved the Babysitters Club! Now I read all over the place. I’m a huge fan of Philipa Gregory, Jane Green, and Jodi Picoult. Have you read the Memory Keeper’s Daughter? I think it would go with your favorite book list. I also just read the Kitchen House which was fantastic! Sharp Objects by Gillian Fynn is dark and twisted and another good read. I should turn off my computer and go read : )

I loved the Babysitter’s Club! I had almost every one I think.

Yes, I’ve read the Memory Keeper’s Daughter, excellent book!

I will have to check out the other authors and books you mentioned, thanks!
