I’ve always loved to read. As an elementary student I remember trying to get the most stars on the reading chart at the back of the classroom. I was in competition with my best friend at the time, she read more and faster than I did!
My goal in 5th grade was to read every book that had won the Newbery Medal. I didn’t read all of them, but did discover some great books in the process!
A few of my favorites included;
The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleischman
Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O’Brien
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
King of the Wind by Marguerite Henry
Looking at that list it’s easy to guess when I was in elementary school! Oops.
My love for reading continued on through junior high and high school, but with an increased homework load, horseback riding, and a blossoming social life, reading took a back seat. Of course, I still read, but not nearly as much as in my younger years. I think I read every horse book available! The Red Pony by John Steinbeck was one of my favorites.
In recent years, my love for reading has been re-ignited. I was given a Nook for Christmas by my older brother when they first came out and have hundreds of books on it by now. I’ve read every. single one. There are several books/series on my Nook that I have read multiple times. I like longer books, books with 500+ pages, because I tend to be a fast reader and can’t afford to be buying a new book to read every few days. I am also drawn to series, since I can follow the characters through multiple books.
My favorite series;
The Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon (I am currently reading this series for the 3rd time!)
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Series by Steig Larsson
The Matched Trilogy Series by Ally Condie
Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
Game of Thrones Series by George R.R. Martin
Medieval Series by Elizabeth Lowell
Wilderness Series by Sara Donati
Kendall O’Dell Series by Sylvia Nobel
